Pottery and Glass inspired by literature and verse

Over the last fifteen years we have commissioned a series of designs from Britain's leading exponents of the decorative arts. Inspired by John Keats' memorable response to a Grecian urn we have taken poetic and literary themes as a starting point inviting potters, painters and glass makers to respond in their own idiom. The quality of the pieces produced and the excitement the idea has met with encourages us to broaden the concept and approach the best exponents of the applied arts engaging them in common project to produce a definitive expression of the artistic spirit of our times, under the name Illyria.

A pack of wolves surround this prestige vase from Dennis Chinaworks. Inspired by our suggestion of theme Sally Dennis produced this intricate family group with anglo saxon imagery forming a border around the base. Pieces of this size and complexity are very rare, particularly as private commissions but we felt it important that our own Illyria name should be represented by the best work that is available at this time, Sally Dennis certainly fulfilled our most optimistic expectations.

In Norse mythology, Fenrir is the wolf son of Loki, bound by the gods he is destined to brake free and eat Odin in the course of the Ragnarok (the twilight of the Gods). Fenrir is a hand thrown, hand decorated vase, approximately 35cms tall. It is designed for Illyria by Sally Tuffin and made in an edition of 10 by Dennis China Works.
